Hi Everyone!

Expanded Horizons Issue 12 has been released! Please make sure to check it out!

Issue 12!

We are having some problems adding the new tag categories to our list, because of a known bug in Wordpress. We're working on getting that dealt with. In the meantime, the new tags exist, they're just not listed on our "stories by topic" list.

In the meantime, there's some stuff I would like to share with you all.

1. Resources: A work-in-progress listing of completed racially diverse spec fic works here. Help them grow!

2. Submissions: I want to see a Mami Wata story. Go for it. Go find it. Go tell your friends to go find it. Go!

3. Artwork: A collection of images of Black mermaids can be found here, many of them images of Yemaya, Iemanja, and Oshun.

4. African Folktalkes/Fae: You should all go google and watch "Kirikou and the Sorceress" on Youtube right now. NSFW if you work with people who would have a problem with non-sexual nudity. (The story line would be rated G.)

[Edit: Yes, you should support the creators. Watch it and if you like, buy!]

You should all go google and watch "Kirikou and the Sorceress" on Youtube right now.

Actually, you should support the creators and buy the DVD if you can... (it might be hard to find) I bought my copy for like four euros.

The Hungarian edition is indeed rated G, I've just checked.

There is also a sequel, but I don't know much about it. I've just gotten to know 3 days ago (really!) that it was released here too.

It somehow reminds me of another cartoon, Fehérlófia... (artful nudity, child protagonist, style based on traditional art etc.) I wasn't about to mention it because I thought it would be completely unobtainable to most people here, having had no English-language release at all. But apparently it still has a considerable fandom, since I've found not one but TWO subtitled versions on Youtube. :O (My DVD has no subtitles at all, so I assume these are fanmade...)

I think this one is marginally better

This is a children's cartoon. Yes, it might be really hard to digest coming from a Western background... in fact I think this is not the weirdest Hungarian children's cartoon by far, I've seen things as a kid that made me think of drugs even in Communist Hungary where people did not discuss drugs too often! :D There was also a TV series of folktales in a similar but slightly more reserved style, but those do not have English subtitles.

...I'm in the middle of writing a Mami Wata story.

It's based on the Mami Wata legend, I should say. Unfortunately it's way too long for Expanded Horizons - I think finished it's going to clock in at around 8,000 words. :/
